GET TO KNOW ME

Nell Osborne, LCPC, PMH-C

I initially became involved in the mental health field while collaborating with Erika's Lighthouse beginning in 2004.  As I continued volunteering and working towards my degrees, I found that many kids and adults were lacking a sense of support and feeling of comfort within a therapy office. I have always enjoyed advocating and educating others to feel empowered to fight stigma towards mental health. Through these experiences and work opportunities, my therapeutic style was created and continues to develop based on evidenced based approaches and relationship building.  I believe that the therapeutic relationship can be one of the most important factors for success in therapy.

I received my Bachelors in Social Work from the University of Tennessee and worked with intensive in home services.  The focus was working with children and families to provide them with therapeutic support to ensure safety within the home.  I received my Master's in Mental Health Counseling from Capella University and worked in a residential facility in Baltimore with adolescent males with criminal charges.  I conducted individual therapy as well as group therapy.  From there I worked as a mental health clinician for the Department of Mental Health in which I was contracted with schools to provide individual and family therapy.  I primarily worked with those who experienced trauma, abuse, depression, anxiety, as well as childhood adverse events.

I am trained in trauma therapy often using a trauma informed method to acknowledge and validate previous traumas and experiences while recognizing the need to rewrite internal dialogues and belief systems for the present. In 2020 I was awarded the Outstanding Employee of the Year as well as received the 2021 Louise Hassenplug Clinician of the Year award highlighting my attention to detail and care for my clients. My therapeutic style ensures the client feels heard and seen while also challenging perspectives to support progress in therapy. I also am trained in internal family systems work as well as Gottman Institute trained and certified Level II couples therapist in 2023.  Additionally, in 2024 I became certified in Perinatal Mental Health to better support, treat, and advocate for mental health in parents.

After having children of my own I decided to open my own private practice in 2021 to allow the perfect balance.  I have found working in private practice allows myself and clients to present as authentic as possible.  I am excited to be involved in the community as a Northbrook individual therapist and supporting community members.

ALL ABOUT THERAPY

What to expect

Nell works with adults who primarily express symptoms related to anxiety and depression and those who are potentially facing life transitions; such as relationships, parenthood, retirement, or job stressors. Nell has found that using a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and client centered approach are some of the most effective with these events. Her clients learn to challenge unhelpful thoughts that may be impacting their mood, work performance, and self worth. She also recognizes the powerful impact a therapeutic environment can have in order to facilitate positive thinking patterns.  Having a nonjudgmental space helps increase confidence in navigating these transitions and achieving personal goals. This form of therapeutic approach often feels more like a conversation that comes natural rather than feeling questioned or judged. Her therapeutic approach allows the client to take time to invest in yourself while addressing how the client's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all interconnected.

Therapy is a space that is meant just for you.  This is the place where you will be seen, heard, and validated with all the challenges you may be facing.  You can expect to explore your internal dialogue and how this may be impacting other aspects of your life.  At times you may feel yourself being challenge, but without discomfort there can be no growth.  If you are looking for a place where you can prioritize yourself and learn how to navigate life's transitions- this is the place for you.
